Training and Background
François Affholder has a Ph.D in agronomy from Agroparistech (Paris School of Agronomy), and holds the ‘HDR’ (French research director’s degree) from Montpellier University. He has an engineer’s degree and M. Sc. in agronomy, water management and agroclimatology from Montpellier’s School of Agronomy, and an engineer’s degree in tropical agronomy. François developed his career across more than 30 years, mostly as a permanent staff at CIRAD, with long term assignments in partner research institutions of Senegal, Brazil, Vietnam (then as seconded by Cirad to IRRI), and currently Mozambique.
Main research domain
His research focuses on family farms of the global south with mixed crop-livestock production systems in which rainfed annual crops are the predominating cropping activities. His main area of interest is on integrated assessment of sustainability of agricultural systems with special attention to climate-related risks, through interdisciplinary collaborations with social sciences and sciences of the ecosystem.
